Square Brass Leg Caps & Foot Cups: Open Ferrule vs Closed Cup

Square legs, square hardware

Round leg caps won’t fit a square leg — the corners lift and the cap spins. For square-section wooden legs you need a square ferrule or cup that matches the profile. The good news: the decision is simpler than with round legs, because there are really only two questions — open or closed bottom, and what size.

(Came here from a round leg? The round leg cap buying guide and the tapered cap guide cover those shapes.)

Open-bottom ferrule (the collar)

Our Square Leg Caps are open at the bottom — a decorative collar that slips over the end of the leg. The collar’s lower edge sits flush with the leg’s base, so your wood still meets the floor and carries the load; the brass is purely the finish. Satin brushed by hand, it reads as a soft, even matte rather than a mirror shine.

This is the right choice when the leg itself should stay in contact with the ground and you just want a clean brass collar at the base.

Closed-bottom foot cup (the floor protector)

Our Square Foot Cups are closed at the bottom, so the cup seats the leg on a solid brass base. Unlike the open ferrule, the cup’s base rests directly on the floor — it both finishes the leg end and shields the flooring beneath from scratches, dents and moisture. That makes it the better pick when you’re protecting a wood or tile floor, not just dressing the leg.

Sizing square hardware

Square parts are defined by outer length × width × height × wall thickness (mm).

  • The open-bottom caps span 24 sizes from 25 × 25 mm up to 60 × 60 mm outer, at a 1.5 mm wall — covering everything from a slim chair leg to a heavy table leg.
  • The closed foot cups come in 3 sizes: 34 × 34 × 25 mm, 36 × 36 × 36 mm, and 48 × 48 × 60 mm, with a heavier 1.8–2.0 mm wall because they bear load on the floor.

Measure the outside of the square leg at the height where the cap will sit, and match the outer dimension. Wall thickness is fixed per size, so you don’t need to specify it.

Solid brass, satin brushed

Both styles are turned from solid brass (no plating) and satin brushed by hand. They pair naturally with the rest of a brass-hardware scheme — see the mid-century leg ferrule guide for the full shape overview.

Frequently asked questions

Open ferrule or closed cup — which do I need?

Open ferrule = a brass collar with the wood still touching the floor. Closed cup = a brass base that seats on the floor and protects it. Choose the cup when floor protection matters.

What sizes do square caps come in?

Open-bottom caps: 25–60 mm outer, 24 sizes. Closed foot cups: 34, 36 and 48 mm, 3 sizes.

Will a round cap fit a square leg?

No — square legs need square hardware, or the corners will not seat.

Are they solid brass?

Yes, solid brass, satin brushed by hand, no plating.
